Power Rankings After Week 6

The rankings stay relatively static after an interesting week in the CFL.

At CFL Power Rankings we collect teams’ cumulative offensive and defensive statistics, weigh them based on how indicative they are of an efficient offence/ defence and compile those numbers into a Strength Rating. You can see the specific metrics used to create the Strength Rating that scores each team. Tell me more about this voodoo.

Rank Team Strength Last Week
1 CGY 26.351 (+ 1.99) 1
2 WPG 25.037 (+ 1.39) 2
3 EDM 21.990 (+ 0.32) 3
4 HAM 20.236 ( 0.47) 4
5 OTT ⇑  19.795 (+ 1.16) 6
6 SSK ⇑  19.649 (+ 1.23) 7
7 BC  19.506 (+ 0.40) 5
8 TOR 15.001 ( 0.38) 8
9 MTL 14.661 (+ 0.18) 9
*Strength Ratings are slightly adjusted due to an error in the stats that has now been corrected.

1. Calgary (Strength: 26.351 (+ 1.99), Record: 5-0)

Nobody is surprised to see Calgary remain on top of the rankings with an easy win over Montreal this week. Bo is looking healthy enough. A tougher test awaits on the road against an unpredictable Saskatchewan team.

Week 7: Preview & Picks

2. Winnipeg (Strength: 25.037 (+ 1.39), Record: 3-3)

Winnipeg has returned to their scoring ways against Toronto. Winnipeg is the highest ranked team with three losses. We won’t really see what Winnipeg is really about until the second half of the season when their schedule gets much tougher.

Week 7: Preview & Picks

3. Edmonton (Strength: 21.990 (+ 0.32), Record: 3-2)

Edmonton was on the bye this week. Their strength is adjusted slightly because of an error in the stats that was found and corrected.

Week 7: Preview & Picks

4. Hamilton (Strength: 20.236 ( 0.47), Record: 2-3)

Hamilton drops two in a row against Saskatchewan and now ships Johnny Football out ut to Montreal. Hamilton is ‘ride or die’ with Jeremiah Masoli now.

Week 7: Preview & Picks

5. ⇑ Ottawa (Strength: 19.795 (+ 1.16), Record: 3-2)

Ottawa puts together an excellent fourth quarter and a late comeback to take the wind out of Travis Lulay and the BC Lions sails.

Week 7: Preview & Picks

6. Saskatchewan (Strength: 19.649 (+ 1.23), Record: 3-2)

Coming out of a home and home series with two wins is rare in the CFL. Saskatchewan improves their strength as a result.

Week 7: Preview & Picks

7. ⇓ BC (Strength: 19.506 (+ 0.40), Record: 2-3)

BC has a good day, but still comes out with a loss and is bumped down in the rankings. Things don’t get easier after the bye week for BC in a matchup against Calgary.

Week 7: Bye

8. Toronto (Strength: 15.001 ( 0.38), Record: 1-4)

Another L for Toronto, who continue to struggle to even put up points, much less put teams away.

Week 7: Preview & Picks

9. Montreal (Strength: 14.661 (+ 0.18), Record: 1-4)

Lots of talk about Montreal for all the wrong reasons. They gave up a lot to get Johnny Football, but there is nowhere for Montreal to go but up. I’m looking forward to August 3rd vs Hamilton!

Week 7: Preview & Picks

How do these rankings work, and why is a team with a better record ranked below another team?
