Power Rankings After Week 7

We’ve got a new leader on the CFL Power Rankings! Who has dethroned Calgary in the top spot?

At CFL Power Rankings we collect teams’ cumulative offensive and defensive statistics, weigh them based on how indicative they are of an efficient offence/ defence and compile those numbers into a Strength Rating. You can see the specific metrics used to create the Strength Rating that scores each team. Tell me more about this voodoo.

Rank Team Strength Last Week
1 WPG ⇑  27.414 (+2.38) 2
2 CGY  27.309 (+0.96) 1
3 EDM 24.266 (+2.28) 3
4 OTT ⇑  20.570 (+0.77) 5
5 HAM  20.040 (0.20) 4
6 SSK 19.692 (+0.04) 6
7 BC 19.506 7
8 TOR 15.136 (+0.14) 8
9 MTL 14.416 (0.38) 9
*Strength Ratings are slightly adjusted due to an error in the stats that has now been corrected.

1. ⇑ Winnipeg (Strength: 27.414 (+2.38), Record: 4-3)

239 points scored. This is what happens when you start your season like Winnipeg has; one more game played than the rest of the league, BC twice, Toronto twice, and Montreal once. You’re going to rack up stats. I do think that Winnipeg is better than their record, but I do expect them to slow down on the statistical front as they have had a fairly easy schedule so far this season.

Week 8: Bye

2. Calgary (Strength: 27.309 (+0.96), Record: 6-0)

6-0, in second place? It’s an odd quirk, and more a reflection of how Calgary is winning games. They stifle teams defensively and aren’t putting up the massive scores like Winnipeg has been. Before you @ me, yes, personally I think Calgary is the best team in the league.

Week 8: Preview & Picks

3. Edmonton (Strength: 24.266 (+2.28), Record: 4-2)

Edmonton crushed Montreal this week to no great surprise and gets a big boost in the strength rating as a result.

Week 8: Preview & Picks

4.  Ottawa (Strength: 20.570 (+0.77), Record: 4-2)

You can win a game without scoring a touchdown. Ottawa only just got out of this game, but seven field goals is an accomplishment, if not very great TV.

Week 8: Preview & Picks

5.  Hamilton (Strength: 20.040 (0.20), Record: 2-4)

Things looked so promising in Hamilton this year, but now they have lost to a team that didn’t score a touchdown, Hamilton’s own passing touchdowns have evaporated, and the most highly hyped backup QB has been shipped out of town.

Week 8: Preview & Picks

6. Saskatchewan (Strength: 19.692 (+0.04), Record: 3-3)

How many times can we write about how Saskatchewan does OK on the defensive side of the ball, only to struggle to move the ball on offence? Rider Nation was giving the offence the ‘Bronx cheer’ plenty at the game, and perhaps they were heard. Zach Collaros has been activated, and Duron Carter might be headed back to offence.

Week 8: Preview & Picks

7. BC (Strength: 19.506 (+ 0.40), Record: 2-3)

BC was on the bye, but things don’t get better as they prepare to face Calgary this week.

Week 8: Preview & Picks

8. Toronto (Strength: 15.136 (+0.14), Record: 1-5)

Toronto has struggled again, and all of a sudden everyone that has been singing the praises of James Franklin is nowhere to be found. He’s going to be backing up this week as Toronto searches for any sort of spark to get the offence going.

Week 8: Preview & Picks

9. Montreal (Strength: 14.661 (+ 0.18), Record: 1-5)

Going to go ahead and predict this weeks’ game against Hamilton will attract some eyeballs.

Week 8: Preview & Picks

How do these rankings work, and why is a team with a better record ranked below another team?
