Power Rankings After Week 16

Modest gains for Calgary and Saskatchewan this week and HUGE gains for Hamilton and Winnipeg after their beatdowns of BC and Edmonton.

At CFL Power Rankings we collect teams’ cumulative offensive and defensive statistics, weigh them based on how indicative they are of an efficient offence/ defence and compile those numbers into a Strength Rating. You can see the specific metrics used to create the Strength Rating that scores each team. Tell me more about this voodoo.

*New* We’ve added a “Projected Finish” heading on the teams’ section below. This is courtesy of Sports Club Stats‘ fantastic simulations.

We’ve added the rolling four-week ranking. I’ve been getting a lot of feedback from angry fans of [insert your favourite team here] wondering why they are playing well but ranked lower. Well, this is a cumulative ranking, that’s why.

The rolling four-week ranking tracks teams performance in their more recent games. You can see it’s tracking the hot teams pretty well.

Enjoy.

1. Calgary (Strength: 35.293 (+1.38), Record: 11-2)

Ho hum, another win at home – the victim this week was the hapless Argonauts.

Projected Finish: 1st in West
Week 17: Previews & Picks

2. Winnipeg (Strength: 32.391 (+2.41), Record: 7-7)

What’s this? Two wins in a row? Winnipeg desperately needed that win, because it looks like an absolute dogfight for 3rd place in the West is going to break out. Winnipeg is still ranked pretty high based off of their record, but they rolled over Montreal and CRUSHED a good Edmonton team, so I’m ok with it and you should be too.

Projected Finish: 3rd in West
Week 17: Previews & Picks

Hey, check out the Ketchup Chip Power Rankings that’s the really good stuff.

3. Hamilton (Strength: 30.954 (+2.90), Record: 7-7)

Don’t dance on the logo… or scuffle on the way to Simoni Lawrence’s party boat. Ham-dog’s utter beatdown of BC has them jumping ahead of Saskatchewan in the rankings.

Projected Finish: 2nd in East
Week 17: Bye

4. Saskatchewan (Strength: 29.517 (+1.14), Record: 9-5)

I can already see the tweets. “BUT SASKATCHEWAN HAS 9 WINS WEED”S NOT LEGAL YET GO ‘DERS WOOOOOOO”

Yeah, nobody here is saying they are a bad team, not at all. In fact, they are right in that top tier and look like they are on their way to hosting a playoff game for the first time in five years. That said, they barely got past Toronto, and Montreal gave them a bit of a scare late, so I’m fine seeing them slot in at four.

Projected Finish: 2nd in West
Week 17: Previews & Picks

5. Edmonton (Strength: 27.827 (-0.65), Record: 7-7)

My-oh-my. Edmonton has got those Grey Cup host jitters! Edmonton is in free fall here and it’s not looking like it’s going to get any easier as they go.

Projected Finish: 4th in West (Crossover to East)
Week 17: Previews & Picks

6. Ottawa (Strength: 27.743, Record: 8-5)

Ottawa spent last week on the Bye – so they hang tight at six.

Projected Finish: 1st in East
Week 17: Previews & Picks

7. BC (Strength:  25.517 (-0.74), Record: 6-7)

One step forward, two steps back. That’s “the way of the road, Bubs” for BC this season. Injury questions, a tough as hell schedule and a Winnipeg team on the rise again looks like they have their work cut out for them in the West. Perhaps a campaign to crossover to the East is in the works while everyone gets healthy?

Projected Finish: 5th in West
Week 17: Previews & Picks

8. Toronto (Strength: 20.940 (-0.40), Record: 3-10)

Who cares, they done.

Projected Finish: 3rd in East
Week 17: Previews & Picks

9. Montreal (Strength: 17.668 (+0.63), Record: 3-11)

Also done. Flashes of vintage Manziel in their most recent game, however, is cause for excitement in La Belle Province.

Projected Finish: 4th in East
Week 17: Previews & Picks

How do these rankings work, and why is a team with a better record ranked below another team?
